BAC Artist Residencies
The Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC) artist residency program provides artists with time, space, and resources to research, experiment, and develop a proposed independent project or collaboration. Artists are invited to spend an average of 3-5 weeks at BAC, during which time they are free to pursue their creative agenda with administrative and technical support provided by BDF staff. BAC residencies often culminate in a work-in-progress showing. Artists thereby have an opportunity to "test" their works before an audience, and audience members have a unique glimpse of the creative process and are exposed to innovative new work.
Student Fellowships
The student fellowship program supports emerging artists as they make the transition from university life to professional life. These young artists receive time, space, and financial assistance to work on projects with the support of an artistic mentor. To date, the fellowship program has supported 35 recent graduates of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Artists-in-Residence
The Foundation hosts one to two artists-in-residence each year. These individuals are gifted young artists who need assistance managing artistic and administrative responsibilities as they launch their careers. The Foundation provides artists-in-residence with extensive studio time, artistic guidance, strategic management support, and opportunities to meet other artists and administrators in the field.
Fund for New Work
Baryshnikov's long history of commissioning new work continues with the Fund for New Work. The focus of this program is commissioning national and international artists to create interdisciplinary pieces. The Fund is intended to produce new work that will be fully staged with touring potential. Since the Center opened, the Foundation's three artists-in-residence have created new work with commissioning fees provided by the Fund.
Hell's Kitchen Dance
Several of BDF's programs converged in 2006 with Hell's Kitchen Dance, a company that was formed to showcase some of the work created at Baryshnikov Arts Center (BAC). Baryshnikov and a gifted ensemble of young dancers—mostly student fellows from The Juilliard School and NYU's Tisch School of the Arts—toured internationally, performing Aszure Barton's Over/Come (created during a BAC residency) and Come In (Fund for New Work), as well as Benjamin Millepied's Years later (Fund for New Work)—all world premieres. In summer 2007, the company embarked on a second tour that began with a run of performances at BAC. The company performed dance pieces by Barton, Millepied, and Donna Uchizono. (Uchizono's Leap to Tall - Fund for New Work). Hell's Kitchen Dance provides a unique opportunity for young choreographers and dancers who are at a critical juncture in their careers, while exposing national and international audiences to fresh new talent.
BDF Presents
Baryshnikov Dance Foundation (BDF) Presents is designed to bring to the stage innovative, contemporary work of choreographers and artists with a distinctive voice. Under this umbrella, BDF has co-presented public performances with Danspace Project, The Kitchen, and New York Theater Workshop. In spring 2007, BDF presentations included two international festivals and a jazz performance with live radio broadcast.
Movado Hour at BAC
The Movado Hour is a free series of one-hour long chamber music concerts presented in a salon setting. Curated by BAC's Director of Music Programming, Pedja Muzijevic, and sponsored by Movado, the series takes chamber music back to its roots by providing music lovers with the unusual opportunity of experiencing music in a small intimate setting with the informal atmosphere of a salon.
BAC Lectures, Exhibitions, and Workshops
An important part of BDF's efforts is to establish a creative community that promotes research, learning, and the exchange of ideas. BAC programming includes an educational outreach component offering a range of free activities for artists. In 2007, educational opportunities for artists included free workshops/lecture-demonstrations with international choreographer William Forsythe, Russian theater director Lev Dodin, and ballet master Azari Plisetsky. Plans for upcoming educational activities include outreach to young artists in the local NYC community.
